Stories of Resiliency: Small business owners who inspired us in 2020

Over the summer, as small business owners began to share how they were pivoting their businesses to meet the needs of their communities and stay open during the pandemic, we were inspired to launch our Stories of Resiliency campaign on Instagram. 

Over the past six months, we have shared dozens of stories from small business owners in our network who have expertly adapted their businesses and overcome massive unexpected setbacks. Here are some of their stories.

Entrepreneurs and small business owners: Open enrollment is underway!

This year we’ve seen how important it is for small business owners, their employees and their families to have access to health coverage. If you or your employees need to enroll in or renew your health insurance plans for 2021 through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) individual marketplace, your time is here. This open enrollment season is taking place from November 1 to December 15, and many will be eligible for premium assistance to help offset the cost of coverage.

Survey: More than 1 in 3 small businesses won’t survive past the next three months without additional financial relief

Small Business Majority files amicus brief urging the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold the Affordable Care Act

Small Business Majority filed an amicus brief today with the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of Texas v. U.S., which has challenged the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The brief urges the Supreme Court to fully uphold the Affordable Care Act and outlines how the law has benefited small businesses, self-employed entrepreneurs and small business employees who previously struggled to access quality, affordable health coverage.

Small Business Majority Urges Congress to Pass Relief Bill

Today, Small Business Majority sent a letter to Congressional leaders urging them to pass a comprehensive and robust COVID-19 relief package. This week kicks off National Small Business Week when just last week, new data revealed small businesses across the country are closing permanently. The consequences of not passing a relief package that includes more funding for small businesses would be catastrophic.

Small Business Owner Submits Testimony on Experience with Predatory Lending

Today, Johnathon Bush, small business owner of Not Just Cookies in Chicago, Illinois, submitted his testimony for the U.S. House Committee on Small Business's hearing on Transparency in Small Business Lending. Johnathon details the harmful impacts that a lack of transparency in small business lending has done to his business, which he built from the ground up.

Small Business Majority Submits Comment of Support for Paid Leave to the Department of Labor

Today, Small Business Majority submitted a comment for the Department of Labor's Request for Information outlining how paid leave policies support small businesses and their bottom lines. Small Business Majority Survey: State of small business six months into the COVID-19 pandemic

Small Business Majority released its fourth survey of its national network of 70,000 small business owners conducted during the pandemic to assess the current state of small business and gauge their views on possible relief measures. The survey also revealed the extent to which PPP and EIDL have served small businesses during the crisis. The survey found many small businesses continue to face an uncertain future without additional relief, with 1 in 4 reporting they won't survive past three months and 16% considering bankruptcy.

As Congress continues to debate the next round of stimulus relief, Small Business Majority surveyed its national network of small business owners to gauge their views on key small business proposals currently on the table. The survey results highlight a number of issues that need to be taken into consideration while finalizing these proposals and reveal that the clock will run out for many of our nation’s small businesses if help doesn’t arrive soon. 

Small Business Majority Recommends Changes to the Small Business Recovery and Paycheck Protection Program Act

Today, Small Business Majority shared a letter with Senators Rubio, Cardin, Shaheen and Collins on recommendations for changes for S, 4321, the Continuing Small Business Recovery and Paycheck Protection Program Act. S, 4321 is a starting point in addressing the lack of flexibility that small business owners who participated in PPP are facing. However, the legislation requires critical changes to provide enough comprehensive changes that entrepreneurs need to sustain their businesses.
